Shame: Sounds like regret and they use that word because someones would only be shameful of an action they regret doing.
Blame: Blame sounds regretful, and it makes a him sound like he is unable to move on from his selfish actions.
Boatloads: It is a word that sounds like it has a higher quantity then "a lot" or a different word that could be used there. This word adds to the tone because it is an extreme word that means a large quantity of something, and in this case shame.
